The Process

Conceptualization Visualization Pre-Production The Shoot The Final Cut

High Definition and digital video have made the production process much more confusing that it was just a few years ago. New delivery options and changing video standards have further clouded the picture. What hasn’t changed is the need for creative, effective storytelling. All productions start with an idea. An idea can come from anywhere. A producer must invite every client to consider what will inspire or compel the intended viewer. What tones to employ, what themes to consider and how to aesthetically marry them in a unified and coherent way - all comprise the brainstorming process that leads to conceptualization.

The manner in which you approach your subject can take many forms. Why are you making a film? Who is your intended audience? Who will tell your story and how? Does it call for an off-camera narrator or an on-camera host? How much time is needed to tell the story without turning off the audience. Though every question need not be answered, it saves time and money if we ask. So we do - before rolling the camera.

A project's ultimate success or failure is determined in pre-production. We make sure that all of the elements are in place - locations, crew, insurance, release agreements, contracts, production equipment, talent, support staff and an approved budget. In addition, we plan ahead for later stages - How will you distribute the finished piece - via the web, broadcast or cable television, DVD or a point-of-sale kiosk? What do you want the film to achieve for you, your company or organization? What is your time frame for completion? These questions need to be answered upfront. This keeps us on budget and on schedule.

Editing can make or break a project. It is where all the creative decisions come together to tell your story. All films require editing. Timing, pacing, music selection and storytelling skills, combined with an innate sense of how the viewer will respond to the piece are what makes a successful editor. A good film is greater than the sum of its parts. Knowing what to throw away is as important as knowing what to keep. Patience is an indispensable virtue. A good editor must not be afraid to build a sequence, tear it apart, and start over again… often more than once.

Our editors have an unparalleled creative toolbox at their disposal. We also plan ahead, saving your material, ready for future revisions or re-purposing your project in years to come.
